When Your Ex Gets a New Partner

Ask a Question
When Your Ex Gets a New Partner

Finding out your ex has a new partner can bring up a lot of difficult feelings, especially when you already feel like time with your children is limited. It is a common worry among separated dads, and one worth addressing honestly.

Why This Feels So Hard

The concern is straightforward: someone else will be spending time with your children, someone who gets to be there on days when you are not. That can feel threatening, even if you know logically that it does not change who their father is.

Many dads describe a fear that their children might grow closer to this new person, or that they will eventually be replaced. These are natural and understandable feelings stemming from genuine love for your children and anxiety about your role in their lives.

If you are worried that your relationship with your children is being deliberately undermined, this is a separate issue. Organisations such as Families Need Fathers offer support and advice on parental alienation and can help you assess your situation.

Your Bond With Your Children

The strength of your relationship with your children matters more than the presence of another adult in their lives. Children can and do maintain strong bonds with their fathers even when they see them less often than they would like.

When your relationship is secure, your children will not simply transfer their feelings to someone new. You are their dad. A stepfather or partner may become a positive presence in their lives, but this does not erase or diminish what you share with them.

If you feel your connection with your children needs work, the arrival of a new partner can heighten your concerns. In that case, focus on strengthening your own relationship with them rather than worrying about the other person. Regular contact, genuine interest in their lives, and reliability all help build trust over time.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

Avoiding the Competition Mindset

It can be tempting to view this as a contest, keeping score of who does what or who the children seem to prefer. That mindset tends to make things worse. Comparing yourself to your ex's new partner, or trying to outdo them, puts pressure on everyone, including your children.

Children benefit when the adults around them can be civil and cooperative. You do not need to be friends with your ex's partner, but keeping interactions calm and respectful helps your children feel more settled.

What your children need from you is consistency and presence. They do not need you to be better than anyone else. They need you to be their dad.

Looking After Yourself

Give yourself time to adjust. For many people, these situations do not feel comfortable at first, and it can take months before the new arrangement starts to feel normal.

Talking to other dads who have been through similar experiences can help. Organisations like Families Need Fathers and Dads Unlimited provide resources and peer support for separated fathers across the UK, including online communities where you can share concerns without judgement.

If you are struggling with anxiety or low mood, speaking to your GP is a sensible step. They can discuss options including talking therapies available through the NHS.

Your feelings about this situation will likely shift as time passes. Everyone adjusts at their own pace, but what feels overwhelming now often becomes more manageable. Your children will show you, through their words and actions, that your place in their lives is secure.

Ask Separated Dads a Question

My son is a separated dad who has a 7 year old son.
After 2 months of separation, my son's ex partner moved her new boyfriend into her home.
This new boyfriend has 2 children but bizarrely doesn't see them. He also admits to being a Foster parent in the past but doesn't Foster anymore.
I could be worrying for nothing BUT......
What can I or my son do to ensure our 7 year old is safe with this man?

Hi i'm just messaging to ask if you could support me in my efforts to get back to Australia to see my son. I was attacked with two knives by his mother 4 years ago, 3 days before he was born. I suffered 36 staples in my head and tendon damage to both hands. I'm a carpenter well used to be. I suffered major depression after having to come back to the uk due to visa issues and legal issues. I saw my son for 3 weeks and had to leave the country. His mother then attacked another man when I was back in the UK and I have video evidence of this. For the last 4 years I have been trying to have contact with my son but I haven't been able to afford the lawyer fees due to it being international lawyers. I hit rock bottom when I returned to the UK and I went through psychosis due to the injuries and ptsd after the attack. I was naive about the whole situation when I was involved in it. Everyone I have spoken to says how unfair the situation is and how it needs to change. After suffering with ptsd after the knife attack it broke my heart. I know this is probably a long shot but My son means the world to me. My dad used to beat my mum up when I was younger so having this happen and me not being there for my son has really affected my life. My dad wasnt around when I was little and I always wanted to be the best dad I could. Iv sent emails to the prime minister in australia and to high up places to try sort the situation out but its the money situation im struggling with. This situation between me and Baileys mum has been impossible. I can understand she has mental health issues and I have forgiven her for what she did to me. The problem is she has manipulated the situation in her favour. I dropped all charges after she attacked me because she has other children. I didn't realise how much this would affect my life and how nasty she could be. My son isn't able to have his birth rights and my fathers rights are non existant. My mum lives in australia and Baileys mum wont allow grandparents rights either. As I said before she has attacked another man after myself and he has died in a car crash magically he was called rhys parramatta and had two children and worked as a prison guard. I have only just started to speak about what she actually did in the relationship. I was set fire to while I was asleep, I was bitten that hard it went through my tshirt and scarred my back. I was also drugged by a bikey gang and ended up on the roof of the house in my boxers. I'm worried about my sons welfare and future I need support from someone who can help with lawyer fees. I would do anything for my son but I'm asking for support now. I feel as if im fighting a losing battle and there is only so much someone can take. I would really appreciate any help you could give me, anything would help its been 4 years now and Bailey needs to know who his real dad is. Please help :) thank you and all the best

My ex was cheating for a year behind my back with this guy and came home with an STD so I dumped her. Turns out she was beating the crap out our son and I had to call the social services anyway a year later the social services are gone after doing nothing for my son or me, they did everything thing for my ex treating her like the victim.
Anyway my ex has been bringing the same sleazy guy around our son. I dont want this guy around our son because there was an incident where he allowed his underage daughter into his bedroom with a guy she met on the Internet and she got raped, while he watched football downstairs, he then bullied her into not calling the police and verbally abused her, he left her the next morning to go to work and she tried to kill herself. Also a lot of other stuff like preying on vulnerable women on Facebook. Hanging around highschools offering rides home to underage girls, waiting outside nightclubs to give drunk vulnerable women lifts home. I've even been told by a few people to warn my ex to make sure he's not secretly videoing her and don't let him take pics as he's a habit of showing them to her mates.
Anyone any thoughts on what I can do.

My divorce was finalized on December 10th 2020, we have a 2.5 year old. My ex is hoping to be living with her new boyfriend by the end of this year. I'm concerned about the affects it will have on our son.

The mother of my kids just broke up with me we have 2 kids and we been together for 10 years. She doesn't wanna talk no more or work it out are kids is 3 and 8. How can a mother not wanna work things out and are babies are so young it kills me to no someone else has her interest and we still have to be parents to are kids it kills me to know another man could be in a house with my kids and I have to find a place for me and my kids until then I'm having to stay at my grandparents house while she stays in the house we moved in together until they move out and get another place. Its killing me

So I want to ask something I got a big problem like I was pregnant to my ex boyfriend I was about 7 weeks pregnant and I left him for personal reasons but anyway I meet my new partner while I was 7 weeks pregnant and my son come out looking like my new partner I just want to know if my partner changed the dna or his got higher genes or if he's actually the father im bit confused on the story I just want to know other people opinions on what they think.
Luke 06/10/2020 at 5:20 pm
My partner's ex is a loose cannon. They have 2 children together and I have 2 children of my own.
He's made allegations that I'm a danger to the children and has even expressed his opinion that he wants to kill me.
He has even voiced this to the eldest child.
I don't condone his actions and tbh, I feel he's quite immature to be thinking this.
We have spoken to the police and have gone down the right channels.
Now whenever he picks the kids up or drops them off, I have to leave before hand so that he doesn't kick off.
He's stated before that he'll never be happy with the situation as long as I'm around.
Now my parter has found out she's pregnant and is stressed because she feels that once he finds out, my days would definitely be numbered.
There's no talking to him, and I feel as though my parter is taking the easy way to not cause any conflict.
I however, can't keep feeling pushed aside whenever he decides to want to see his kids.
Any suggestions?

Hi

My partner of 8 years & 3 children.
She broke it off suddenly..

The legistics of the housing situation ment we had to live together for a month.

I found out very quickly that she was in touch & meeting with a child friend, who I also knew.

It came to a head on our youngest 2nd birthday, I seen she was flirting with this guy over text while in the car with our children present. Very cheeky.

She moved out the next day..

Shes seeing him now & I've heard on the grapevine that he's just using her.

I've broke several times..

I've realised my family is what I make it.

It's hard ladies & gentleman.

Very hard.

Stay strong!

Exercise
Try & eat right
Make time for family & friend
Set short term goal
Set long term goals

My daughter got an award because shes been keeping upto date with her homework..

I did that sh*t.
She's hasn't even bothered.

Strength & control.

Unstick yourself.

I sincerely hope someone out there with an answer to give advice to how to handle my personal crisis that I’m going through. I dated this woman at work . It went back and fourth with us . She was cool , but vicious and belittle me at times . In the making I got her pregnant . Got an abortion by the way . Last words , “ we didn’t vibe” . She broke my heart to pieces ! Now she’s going out with another man from work ,I heard they are moving in together, and they’re thinking of having a child . He’s 54 , she’s 34 ! How ? Why? Barely met this man and myself . A year of her working there and now this ?!.... any perspective, advice is appreciated.

Well i moved to a new town with my wife and kids to start a new life . leaving my business to run remotely with staff .
On getting to this new town i felt lost and lonely being away from my work and being busy , it also opened a can of worms how my out of control my wifes drinking was and the toxic behavior that followed , i gave her an ultimatum its the drinking or or family she chose the drinking and i moved out back to home town 900 km away from the family , 1 year on she has a new partner who is living in our family home while i practically live on the street trying to get the house on the market so i can settle.
I am being very calm and not once ever text or called with any abuse which i think is serving me well at this point , what ever she throws at me i just let it deflect off me like i dont care , of course i do but need to be strong as possible.

Hi, I have been married for 26 years. My husband is an ex convict. I practically took care of my children needs and wants. I knew my ex has been cheating on me. But I had to stay with him until all my children are all grown up. I didn't want their little minds get messed up. I have a 15 year old son. I finally kicked him out of my life. We have been separated for 3 months. He doesn't support my son. One day he came to my son's school to see him. He told my son he has a new partner in his life. My son was bothered by it. What father will tell his son about him having a partner? I feel he is trying to bring me down. I've moved on with my life. I am happier then ever, but this really bothered me. He made my child involved.

I have been seperated from My ex and mother of my child for 4 years, when we broke things we decided amicably that we would a year before introducing our child to neew partners however she then felt the need to do this only 1 month after the break, since she has had 3 other kids with her new partner which is fine with me I'm happy for them, however whenever I mention the new partner meeting the little one who I've been with for a year my ex gets very angry and volitile and doesn't let me entertain the fact, any advice on what I can do to help ease the situation?
Thanks everyone

Urgent need some help.
I was whit my girlfriend for 17 years. We have a wonderful daughter of the age of 6.
Our problems start 4 years ago, becos of my job. She was very jealous as I have contact whit many girls, although I never cheated on here, and she knew this. Also in she's opinion I was not helped she whit everyday work whit the kid,I was neglected she, which I agree to some point. Well here our problems starts, she gives me an ultimatum, that if I love she I must quit my job and fined another one. After time, I agree and I quit my job. But from this point all become iven worst for booth, as I start to be depressed, I can't fined another job and I start to use drugs. After a year of depression and self-destruction she put me out of she's house, and I start to live like homeless, from time to time she gave me some money to buy some food and this was our contact. Well two months ago I fined some job which give me enough money to start living like normal person, it's a hard job, but I can live by my own, and I am happy whit this. I start to make contact whit my ex, and she replays to my messages, but in the meantime she confesses me she has another boyfriend for two months, and she say that is happy and in love, and she don't fell nothing for me any moor. I go for no contact but due to we have a daughter together I must interact whit she from time to time i was sending some messages. Also she aloud me to see my daughter only one time per week. She also agrees to meet whit me one time, and we got to have a drink, but I start to feel needy and sorry for what I did, she rejected me immediately, she tells me that between us is over and I must accept it as soon as better for me and move on stairway I will be only hurt. She also tells that my daughter like she's new boyfriend, and they both are happy whit new guy. I go no contact again for one week now. Today I send some messages again about contact whit my child, but i don't receive any replay. This week I also have a new job interview, and I was selected for a high profile job, which give me an opportunity to get a decent payment, the problem is my job will consist in travelling around the world and not be present in my hometown and country for a while.

I still love she and I don't know how to fine a solution for my problem to get she back. Any advice is welcome.

Thank you from the heart and good bless you all.

@nikki.after reading your story .i am glad my daughter has a good mother and step father that pay for her .because I won’t be (coming back )and understand about going off the radar thinking real hard about doing it again (gods truth )but (permanent this time) .my daughter most likely doesn’t want to see me she wouldn’t even remember me (gods truth )as I her last time I seen her she about 3 feet tall .let her mother and husband be in control( I don’t care )they have the (burden) off the child not me I walked free to live my life (gods truth)as for slagging off there is none off that I have no contact and don’t want contact.because if there was contact there will be fights 100 percent .
Nikki 25/11/2019 at 7:52 pm
My daughter's mum kicked me out and soon after got with another man. My daughter was 2.
Within a few weeks she was calling him daddy. I ended up moving away and went off radar for about a year. I got back in touch but my ex wouldn't let my daughter know I was in touch, for about 2 years. Eventually I got to see her again and moved back to the same town to be near my daughter. We had a great relationship but that all changed after I moved to the school she wanted to go fo's catchment area so she could be accepted. After that I hardly ever saw her. I felt pushed out. My ex was in total control of my daughter and she would always ask her
mum for permissionn to do anything with me. I felt pushed out completely. My ex says my daughter is the one who doesn't want to see me. I've never slagged her or the step dad off Infront of her and been easy going about it. One time I said I wanted to see her and was willing to take her to court.....she went off on one threatening me with all sorts.

Man after reading these stories of other guys spurned I fit in 100%. I was with my wife 18 years until December of 2018 she told me the spark was gone. As a guy who is old school believing in working things out I was in shock especially since we had a nice movie night out 1 week prior where everything seemed fine. Well things obviously were not fine in her eyes where I just figured we would work through whatever it was bothering her. Anyways so now we both are under separation agreement but have both began dating. She just broke the news to me that she has been someone else for few months where this guy has been around my daughter without my knowledge. It absolutely pisses me off since she lied multiple times and was not up front with me when it comes to my daughter. I'm already having major issues with the fact I only see my daughter once per month feeling like I will be replaced soon. I will never understand how someone can walk down the isle and then after all those years turn to pure stone pulling the rip cord. A good guy would never do that and I know damn right a good loving woman would never do that either unless she is having some sort of midlife crisis. In the end I hope i can deal with all this hurt realizing life and people can be insanely cruel. Though I have started dating I will never, ever trust fully again with all my heart. I lost everything in this marriage, house, dog, her family who I was super close to especially her father but worse of all the time i took for granted watching my daughter sleep and wake up with me in the same house every morning. It's amazing how quickly things can change, I just hope it gets better in time where somehow memories of when times were good fade. Best of luck everyone in this mental crushing situation. Keep your cool the best you can and try to realize you are their one and only father. You can never be replaced unless you allow it to happen.

I’m in a complicated situation. I have 3 girls with two different mothers. The mother of my eldest 2 daughters takes them to stay with the mother of my youngest daughter. I am separated from both mothers. I think this is a very weird situation and get told from both of them that it isn’t weird at all. I want to know your thoughts as I find it very inappropriate. Also the mother of my first 2 daughters sees all my family which have cut ties with me for reasons that are unknown to me.

My Ex and I do not have a good relationship, but I have moved on and am in a very good situation with a woman I have dated for months.

My Ex was dating someone for 8 months, and only recently stopped seeing him about three weeks ago. During that time, he never came to a game, graduation, dance recital, etc. Last week, I believed that he showed up for the first time, and told my son it was good to finally see him there and, "I would have to go introduce myself." His reply was that was not the guy she had been dating....I have not had a problem with her dating and even kept the kids a month ago so she could go on a vacation with her (then) boyfriend.

Over the past week, he has come to multiple games and a graduation. Tonight, he interrupted a conversation I was having with my son, speaking directly to him from about 20 feet away. This has worried me, but don't want to step out of line.

How do I handle what seems to be a new revolving door situation with my Ex, and do so without hurting my kids? When we initially seperated, we had a clause in our temporary orders that stopped us from bringing dates to the children. My worry is that this guy won't stick, and we will rinse/repeat. Any suggestions? Do I just keep my nose out of it? Introduce myself to every new guy (my Ex is ice cold, and was very rude to my current girlfriend when she tried to talk/introduce herself)?

I have no desire to ever get back together with my Ex. She was not faithful, and I filed for divorce.

I just split from my ex partner of 6 years a d within about 4 weeks she is seeing someone else I've asked for her to not let the new guy around my son who's only 18 months as I've only just left the house and relationship bit she still has him around my son no respect for me at all, its horrible because I dont know if i still have feelings for her or whether it's just due to being together so long but theres so many lies she tells and I dont really know what to believe anymore, I dont want this new guy coming in thinking he can take me out the equation he tries to be nice to me and stuff but I cant help but hate him and hate her for what shes done to me so confused right now

I have a huge problem. My soon to be ex husband went back to his first child’s mother which is completely fine .BUT the both of them and his family STOLE my child for 7 months and I had to take him to court. I won full physical and joint legal and he gets visitation. With that being said I still haven’t met this chic and it’s been almost 4 years. Can I stop her from being around my son with him only having him 63 days out of the year if they are both making me feel uncomfortable about her being around my son.??? He is 2 1/2 and can’t rwally speak for himself or defend himself and for them (him and his family) to hide her so well is very questioning to me???????

Good read but how i would like advice on how to deal with your ex partner and mother of your child dating someone who used to be your friend for 20 years. I’m finding things so hard due to the betrayal of the situation. Now me and my old friend had already fell out a year before any of this happened and I have never really been on good terms with my child’s mom even more so after she chose to get in relationship with my old friend. I go through my mother when it comes to seeing my child. I spent all last year being put down as a person to the point I was close to ending my life cus of the stress she had corsed me. My child is my whole world, im a good guy but have not always got everything right. My issue now is my child being around this embarrassing situation. And the fear of my child getting close to her new partner sickens me. He has to previous baby mothers so not really a role model either. I’m trying to be civil about things but I keep loosing my head aswell as reacting to some of the insulting things they say about me. Its making me act out of character and making myself look daft at times. This is just to be brief I hope someone can shed some light on this and help me out thanks

Thanks for this, I’ve found it helpful. My wife and I split up after five years of being basically nothing more than housemates, it was the right thing to do, and it was amicable. I moved out and we share our daughter’s time fairly evenly, slightly more in her mum’s favour because that’s the home where she grew up. A year on and I’ve found an amazing new partner who also has a daughter, and my daughter has got to know them both, with my ex’s blessing.
Now though, my wife has met someone new, and all my anxieties and fears have taken over. It’s my worst nightmare, to think of another man being a part of my child’s upbringing, it brings me genuine pain to think about it. But I know I can’t have my cake and eat it - I can’t expect my ex to be ok with me finding someone new and stay single herself.
This article has helped in knowing that I’m not the only one with these fears, and that there is a way to be ok with it.

Sorry, I forgot to add my question. How can I legally stop my ex from asking out 7 year old daughter to ask questions about my partners life? Do me and my partner not have rights to a private life? How can we enforce this? Is there some kind of Cease & Desist letter a police officer, solicitor or court can send? I've just got off the phone to West Midlands police, they already have the incidents from 2014 where the police spoke to my ex explaining that he cannot ask questions about my private life (where I was living at the time), there was also a non-molestation order made in 2012-2013 as I was a witness to a crime he committed while serving in N.I.

Hi ime tina ime 41 I have come out of a 6year relationship on and off. Over a year and a half ago. We have a beautiful six Yr old son together. We have been through court for contact issues as my son did not want to go to his dad's weekends. My son was 3/4 then. He's OK about going now there's a court order his dad kept breech ING. When his dad picks him up for contact he's still hostile towardse. I've done the no contact rule for my self and blocked him this seems to have made things worse. He was controling and minipulating at one pint he was going through my phone messages he dident find nothing. This led to a massive brake up becouse he was trying to accuse me of speaking to a good friend of mine who's been in the family for years when I was growing up. This led to him leaving me and putting his hands on me. He ended the relationship with me leaving our son behind. Its been a year and a half now I tryed to sort things out with him rather than someone new he was being pig headed about his self. So I asked him to givee closure he couldn't I asked him if he dident love me anymore he couldn't answer non of it. All he said was stop backing him in a corner. So after that I blocked him after him blaming me for everything him trying to wind me up with txt messages. I haven't been in contact with him since two weeks. Apart from him dropping my son back home. He saw me with a gentleman two weeks ago through the window. Since then he picked my son up for contact and he said to me out the blue your gutted you are I asked him what he meant by that he just said I don't want to be with you no more. I asked him that two weeks ago like. I found out after my son came back from contact that daddy's got a girlfriend. How's he suddenly got a girl in two weeks of him saying he was on his own and just goes to work and back. Hours chatting on the phone. Becouse he saw a guy in my house he said to my son its ok son daddy will have a girlfriend next time you come what's going on here can someone please tell me

I’m the mother of a 13 year old. Ex and i split over a year ago,and I honestly thought we would be able to co-parent in unison. How wrong was I. When my ex asked if we should try again and I said no, he made sure that he’d pay me back no matter what. Took up with a woman (whose marriage broke down due to her affairs, taking her daughter on their dates) immediately and moved in seven weeks later...even though she isn’t someone I’d want near my daughter, I never stopped them getting to know each other. At that time our daughter started having panic attacks, and anxiety. Tests at doctors, weekly visits to a child therapist. Daughter found it all too much, and ex agreed their holiday would be just them two. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case, and our daughter was put in a situation where she had to endure the OW and her much older daughter. When she got home she was so distraught that her dad had lied to her.,that she came to the conclusion her dad just wasn’t the Man she thought he was. She told him she wanted nothing to do with that part of his life and was unhappy he lied. As her mum I made excuses for him, tried to explain, adults don’t always get it right, but dad loves you etc....at this point in time, she plays her face when she has to see him. Won’t stay over with him anywhere ( at one point he was booking hotels for them to spend time together). He’s constantly questioning her about me ( which I’ve asked him to stop) and was stalking me up until recently, when i had to get the local police to have a word in his ear. I really do want my daughter and her dad to have a good relationship, but at what price.? Her therapist wants her to ask dad to attend a meeting but she doesn’t want him there, says it’s because of him she has a therapist. It’s a real mess, and my ex minimises everything. I so want his BS to end and for him to really put her first, and what she’s going through..he’s constsntly going on about money, and he pays too much, even telling our daughter the same...can he not see the effect this has on his only daughter? thank-you for listening any advice would be appreciated.

Hello,

What do i do if the new partner is claiming he is a parent of our child.
The relationship is 2 years old and they keep Gouding me with this.
They keep bad mouthing me to our child and my child is starting to imitate their language towards me. When I asked him to go stand by his coach incase he is called on the child said "you can't force me to do it" this language is something his mother says when I'm refused contact "he does not want to go and I'm not forcing him"
this partner has verbally assaulted me at the football matches when the family court have ordered me to attend and he keeps ensuring that my child doesn't speak to me and tries to keep him away from me when I attend.

I'm fed up of all the hostility and arguements and feel that the situation is getting worse and our child is in the middle of it all and it's very upsetting for me, I have tried talking to them but they keep insisting on conflict instead of resoloution.

If you have evidence that your ex said she will pay you back, then you can take the matter to the small claims court

Hi, my ex has gone on holiday with her new partner and has taken my daughter along. Good yes. I’m fine with that. Here’s the rest. Our split was after years of bad feeling, a real breakdown. Mistakes had been made and never forgotten. It was the right thing to do. I mate is amicable. Left the home with nothing just shared access with my daughter. It’s been two years now. I’ve helped with money as much as possible and things, with a few moments, have gone relatively smoothly. A few months ago she asked for help with money to go away on holiday. Cyprus where her sister lives. Can I pay for the daughters flights. No problem. Then can I pay for the exes flights, and she’ll pay me back her part. If I say no then the daughter can’t go, so fine. She has not paid the money back. In between then and now she has met a new fella. He books flights to Cyprus and they have gone together with my daughter. I have paid for my ex to go on holiday with her new boyfriend of a couple of months. I am raging and can’t control how angry I’ve gotten. Any thoughts on how I can handle this? When they back I don’t know what I’m going to do.

@NM
Thanks for your reply.
Their is absolutely no need for my ex to feel threatened.
He should be happy that his children have another loving adult in their lives.

Our household is firm and secure for our 4 children and that is all any parent should want.

But, im sad to say, i know it wont be long before he finds something else ridiculous to target us about.

Thanks for reading x
NM Editor 28/06/2018 at 1:54 pm
@blueblack - seems pretty one sided to me. If he was a confident parent he would be happy to share. Maybe he just doesn't like your partner - but it sounds more like an alpha male testosterone thing. You know what men are like when faced with other men......ridiculous!

@Ben J
Thank you for your reply.
All this anger really hurts me. i think my ex would definatly prefer i was single which is a shame hed wan that for me.
It just seems that my ex is ok with my h2b providing financial support for his children but would prefer they didnt form any emotional bond whereas my ex considers his w2b to be "best friends" with my children.
why can it be ok for them but not ok for us?
It just doesnt seem fair especially when i try to stick up for my relationship he states that im not supporting his relationship with his children.
Surely as long as i dont hinder their contact either in person or phone etc then i dont actually need to re einforce anything. He shouldnt need me to if hes doing enough?

thanks agen for reading x

@blueblack - People think in different ways and your ex husband obviously feels threatened. Time my heal this rift and the dislike for your husband to be. You could write your ex a letter explaining that he will always be the kids dad and you will make all the effort you can to ensure the relationship with his kids continues and that he will always be the main focus. But, he also has to meet you halfway. If he doesn't and continues to be narrow-minded about this there is not much you can do (what does he expect you to do, remain single for the rest of your life?) You can't please all of the people, all of the time. It would be nice to have a 'happy' divorce - some people can manage it, some can't.
blueblack 25/06/2018 at 8:29 am
Advice for needed please...
divorced for 6 years . both getting re married soon after 5 year relationships. ex husband HATES my h2b with a passion feeling that he is trying to take his place. This is not the case as my h2b would not allow that for his own child.
He accepts i am remarrying but i feel this anamocity will never end and i also feel that is unjustified. My h2b is is a good man and works very hard to provide for us all which i think my ex should be pleased about but he sees it as my h2b trying to take over him as a dad.
My h2b will not be "dad" to my kids he will be my husband.
My kids all love him but ex cant/wont accept that he make us all happy including his children.

How can i create peace here?

TIA

So my ex and I separated after her affairs, she now is engaged to our old neighbor who has 30 mil in the bank. They spoil my daughter like crazy and I cannot play that game. My ex even planned fathers day away with him to keep her away from me. I fear I am losing my daughter for good, she is 17 and now has the party house and trips and money to do whatever she wants. I do not know how to rebuild a father daughter relationship that she is clearly not wanting now that she is allowed to do whatever she wants.

Unless your boyfriend's ex can prove that the child is in danger when in your care, there is little she can do. As in all cases, the court’s main concern is the welfare of the child in question. The court will always put the child’s best interests first and this main issue will determine the outcome of any application for an order.

I’m having a real hard time as to letting another man watch my son as I have never met him so I meeting him tomorrow night for the first time. I’m really nervous and scared. The days he would watch my son he would have his 1 year old daughter as well. Please help! What questions should I be asking him?
SeparatedDads Editor 11/05/2018 at 11:21 am
You can write to the school and request that only those with parental responsibility of your child should be allowed to parents evenings/meetings. If the school refuses, then your only option would be to apply to court. As in all cases, the court’s main concern is the welfare of the child in question. The court will always put the child’s best interests first and this main issue will determine the outcome of any application for an order.

@Chip - While some fathers may try to keep a current partner secret because they live in fear of their ex's restricting access to their children (especially if their ex's have been previously unpredictable in this way), this is a little different in that your partner is trying to stop his ex from moving on. This is unfair, especially as he has moved on (one rule for one, should allow the same rule for the other). If his ex moves on and meets someone else, as you say, this does not mean that someone else will replace him in his children's affections. So, his actions are quite selfish here on several counts. As in all advice, rational communication is key here. But, for yourself and your own peice of mind, you may wish to consider a deadline to this situation i.e that if he doesn't come clean about seeing you, then you will yourself move on. As soon as I knew the relationship was serious with my new g/f I told my ex and my kids met her after four months. I'm not saying I'm perfect, but it seems that your OH is playing both you and his ex :(
Chip 19/01/2018 at 9:02 am
Hi there, I'm hoping you can help. I've been seeing a separated dad for 10months now and although I've met his family, he still hasn't told his ex about me. When I've asked him about it he finally admitted that he's scared that if he tells her he's met someone that she'll rush out and find someone new who will replace him as a father to his 2 children. He's reassured me that her moving on isn't an issue for him but the thought of him being replaced as a father kills him. I've tried to reassure him that that will never be the case because the bond he has with them is incredible but I'm at a loss as to what else to do. I want to support him as best as I can but I also want to feel like we're leading a normal relationship whereby I don't have to feel like a secret. Not to mention that I want to be a part of his children's lives but I can't until his ex knows about me which I feel is the decent thing to do. It's really starting to cause tension and that's the last thing I want. Any thoughts or advice on this please? Even if it's just pointing us in the direction of reading material... I'll take anything.

My ex partner left me around 5 months ago. Taking my then 1 year old daughter with her. One day she decided she wanted a break, in the next few weeks she had moved out completely. She has now entered into a new relationship. All through the split up we talked amicably and agreed that a new partner is not to be introduced straight away and that we would talk through it when that situation arises..
I then find out that after two dates with this new partner, my daughter was introduced and he had stayed over with her. They are currently six weeks into a relationship, where he not only stays almost every night, but has also been left alone with my daughter when the ex has gone to work in the evening. I have expressed my concerns with this behaviour and have been completely ignored. I have my daughter 6 nights out of 14, more than enough time for my ex to get to know her new partner a bit better..
Is there anything I can do about this? This new partner could be a completely reasonable guy, but I do not believe six weeks is enough to get to know someone well enough to leave your 1 and a half year old with.

Me and my ex broke up and I got with someone new quite quickly but I known him before that. As friends I introduced him to my daughter and then we got together. Me and my partner have been together 7 months,I'm pregnant with his baby. Basically my ex isn't allowing my partner to be around my child and says he's safeguarding my child. Me and my partner are not a threat to her. He's even made me pick between my daughter and partner which I find unfair. I've been put under nothing but stress since me and my partner have got together. He's threatened me with court quite a lot but hasn't done nothing about it. Can he stop my partner from being around my child?

I have a question about my ex partner. We have a 2.5 year old daughter together. He has had a Girlfriend for about a year on and off. They have split up a number of times and she has caused a lot of problems with me and him. I have agreed for my daughter to stay at her house as they don’t live together. He has my daughter every other weekend and now he is saying that he’s going to work on a day at the weekend so wants his girlfriend to look after my daughter, along with his other daughter and her two kids of her own. I’m not comfortable with this. I’ve accepted the fact she will be involved and allowed her to stay at her house. But I do not want her looking after my daughter when I can just have her back. He is now refusing to have my daughter at all because I haven’t agreed to this. Where do I stand with this? He says he’s taking me to court. I think I’m being reasonable but He doesn’t agree.

I've found out that she is leaving our son with her bf while she goes to work... am I entitled just to go get our son or will the law (British) protect him and say she is entitled to do this? I know nothing about this man although my son seems to get on with him...
SeparatedDads Editor 05/10/2017 at 12:37 pm
You have no legal rights to prevent your ex from moving on, or stopping your kids from witnessing a marriage. Having 'mental health issues' is neither a crime. Many people have mental health issues of varying degrees - but it doesn't mean they are a bad person in any way or shouldn't be in contact with children. As difficult as it is for you, you cannot prevent your ex from getting on with her life. Your ex needs permission from you (if you have parental responsibility), to take your children out of the country, Much depends upon whether you trust that your ex would not place your children in a situation that was harmful to them. You can take an agreeable stance, or you can challenge her decision. If you challenge her decision then you would have to try to resolve the matter via mediation, or if you can still not come to an agreement, through the courts (which is really a last resort). Much also depends upon whether you wish to give consent to your ex taking your children to another country to live and again if you cannot agree, it would be up to the courts to decide what it thinks is in your children's best interests regarding whether you or your ex gets residency. If you can agree things amicably, all the better. If you can't then you really would need to think seriously about the issue. If it goes to court, the court’s main concern is the welfare of the children in question. The court will always put the children’s best interests first and this main issue will determine the outcome of any application for an order.

My ex and me separated 3 years ago and despite some initial difficulties our kids (now 3 & 6) live with for about 40% of the time. In July she met an American online and met him for the first time in September when they got engaged. My kids have never met him but have spoken to him on the phone. I know very little about him and as far as my ex is concerned all I need to know is that he is "awesome, amazing and perfect". From Facebook I have learned he has mental health problems and lives with his parents near Chicago. She wants to take kids there in July 2018 to stay with him. I'm very uncomfortable with this as it will be the first time they have met him - so not a gradual introduction at all. And to top things off they will be getting married then too. I'm uncomfortable that the kids will watch their mother marry a man who they don't really know and who certainly doesn't know my kids. I've expressed my concerns to my ex but she says I'm being unreasonable. Help!
SeparatedDads Editor 26/09/2017 at 11:30 am
I am sorry to hear this. It is undoubetdly tricky if you still have feelings for your ex and the mother of your child. Obviously, there is some connection there if you are still sleeping together. However, you also have to respect the fact that she no longer wants a relationship and try to accustom yourself that over time both you and her will/may move on. In the meantime, maintaining a supportive friendship and working together for what is in the best interests of your son is your best option. If your ex does meet another partner, try not to let your emotions get in the way. As long as you have a good and consistent relationship with your ex and your son, then your life will, after time, sort itself out too and any pain will lessen. Remember, you too may go on to meet someone else who you do fall for.
Shazza 25/09/2017 at 1:41 pm
@Bigd1982 it all seems to me like you have made a mistake - we all do at some point in our life and she is punishing you for this, the fact that you are expressing how you feel from a womens point of view is making you look weak, the fact she isn't interested would suggest to me there is someone else or she is in the process of talking with someone else . its good to see such a loving father figure in there child life, it sounds like you have a strong bond with your son....if only my ex husband was like you ha ha. all I can suggest is if she isn't interested don't waste your time with her be there for your son and find someone who can appreciate you and feelings.

Me and my X has been seprated for year but have been sleeping together on and off, She fell pregnant some years back and we ended up having a beautiful little boy who is now 4, I ended up having a relationship which I wasn't happy in so ended this as realized after a while it wasn't right for me and I still love my sons mother, she claims to be still single but im not convinced I have told her how I feel about her and I want to get back together but my family doesn't get on with her and she says it wouldn't work because of this, I have my son every evening after school and at weekends so spend a lot of time together, im so scared that she will or has met someone else I cant stand the thought of her being with someone else and being around my son. I wish there was something I could do to convince her we can make it work and hopefully have a great family.

@Apollo - there are ways of explaining issues. It's not fair if one parent blames the other, that's where problems start and that is unfair on the kids as it's only one side of the story and we know to every story there are two sides. So when both parents blame each other and the kids are stuck in between it is not good for the kids. But, I agree there are levels of explaining that you are having trouble with the situation and perhaps missing them is understandable. But kids will always somehow think it is their fault, so protecting them from this is a good thing. There are lots of self-help books out there that may be useful. Have a look on Amazon, there are shed-loads!

My ex and I separated about a year ago now - before we ended things. She went back to her ex boyfriend who dumped her prior to us meeting 7 years ago and jumped into a relationship with me immediately (I was unaware of this til our desperation talks).

Fast forward to today and I'm having trouble dealing with the lost time I previously had with my kids while still processing the situation. While I know it's all for the best, my heart still hurts and I'm still dealing with the degree of change this entails.

My problem is this: most of what I'm reading is telling us (ex's) to keep our adult emotional processing to yourself, and I get that - but to a certain extent. I have issue with the idea of censoring kids and being inauthentic in communicating these difficult emotional periods in our lives to our children. I feel like we raise our kids in a bit of a fantasy world, I get they're innocent and all that jazz, but I kind of feel like not sharing our feelings (in a reasonable manner expressing why we're having a bit of trouble with the new situation) creates an unrealistic portrayal of what being human is. I feel this creates an emotional disconnect as we grow, especially for men who historically have issue communicating and processing emotions. I'm not a superhero. The world is not perfect. Why do we feel it necessary to represent a false reality to protect them? Yes, theyre brains are not fully formed, but maybe forming them with a simplified version of the problems we deal with as adults will create more realostic problem solvers for tomorrow.

I'd really like to hear from some others about this. I'm having trouble locating good info on this subject.

Thanks

July 2018, is still a fair time away and anything could happen until then. However, if it comes to a wedding, we can only assume that you trust your ex's judgement is accurate and she has picked a good person who is willing to care for your kids. Trust me, it is a lot worse if the man wasn't promising to take care of your kids. Long distance relationships are quite often difficult to maintain long term, so it is a case of watching the situation carefully. Your ex has to request your consent to move out of the country and you can refuse. However, this means your ex would have to apply to court and the court would make a decision based upon what it thinks is in the best interests of your children regarding whether to let them go. The relationship might yet be a flash in the pan, but for that you would have to wait and see. Until then, you may wish to seek some legal advice in order to explore your options.

My ex wife and me separated 3 years ago. We have 2 kids, now 3&6. Despite some initial problems we now get on okay(ish). I have the kids every other weekend plus 2 or 3 nights every other week. She met an American man online in July and went to visit him 3 weeks ago. The kids stayed with me. She was engaged to him the day after she got there. She wants to move over there with the kids within 2 years but plans to marry him in july 2018.
She has told the kids all about the proposed wedding and although this man will not become their new dad he will love them and care for them. How does she know!? My 6 yr old has spoken to this man on the phone. He says that they love each other. She has fed them all kinds of stuff about how perfect he is. I don't like the situation at all. She's known him since July, met him face to face 3 weeks ago and stayed with him for a week and is now telling my kids he's the best thing since sliced bread and how he loves my kids! He has a daughter of his own who he only sees in school holidays. What can i do!?
SeparatedDads Editor 04/09/2017 at 11:24 am
The fact your children stay over at your ex's boyfriend's house will not affect the amount you pay. Child maintenance payments are based on your children's day-to-day needs, not where they sleep when in the care of the resident parent. The only thing that affects payments is the number of nights your children stay 'overnight' with you. The five hours they come and return home is not counted.
SeparatedDads Editor 04/09/2017 at 11:14 am
Any parent with parental responsibility is deemed responsible for the welfare of their child and making decisions based upon what is in the child's best interests, so there is no rule against your ex asking another person to care for your child. However, if you feel your child's welfare may be at risk from your ex leaving her with someone else, then you should discuss this between you both in order to attempt to resolve the issue.

Hi can someone give me some advice. Me and my ex fell out about 2 months ago we have a child age 3 which we both share her but she never has her on her days so I end up having her 5 times a week but I don't mind but just found out that when she had her she left are child with her new partner who she meet not to long ago is this right is there anything I can do to stop this happening
Spitzberg 03/09/2017 at 12:40 pm
I am seperated from my ex, I am now back in work and about to start paying maintenance, however, my little girl has told me she is now sleeping over at her mum's new boyfriend's house. Does this affect my payments? Currently its 1 day a week I think, but could be more.
Also my two children stay over Fri-Sat and 5 hours on a Wednesday, how do you calculate these Wed hours on the child maintence calculator as its only based on days/nights spent.
SeparatedDads Editor 24/08/2017 at 2:01 pm
Any change or surname would not affect your parental responsibility and the fact you are still your son's father. In some situations, if your ex was to have another child, then for family uniformity your ex may request a name change. If you as the father refuse and your ex decided to take the matter to court, the court would generally allow the change because of family uniformity. However, this would still not detract from your position.

Hi all,

I'm 24 and I have a 2 year old little boy who turns 3 in September

Me and his mum (23) split up before the birth and have had a kind of okay relationship, getting on very well for the sake of our little lad

Recently she's moved away down south 4 hours away and I see him maybe once/ twice every couple of months due to travelling issues, costs etc but I facetime everyday

She moved down there with her new partner of 6 months and just yesterday he purposed and she said yes

My son doesn't have my surname anyway but I am on the birth certificate and had lots and lots of contact before they moved, always paid and generally did Everything for him.

I'm worried of course about the whole him calling this new guy daddy which I'm sure I'll live with but the fact she could change his surname to this new guys which I'm guessing she'll take on as well

How would that affect me at all? Or would it not etc ?

My ex fiancé and I seperate while she was pregnant and has a new partner now. She talks to me maturely when her and her BF fall out but once they make up she's very nasty towards me. For example most recently, she gave birth to our daughter and we were talking very nicely about how she is etc (they'd broke up at this point) then out of the blue she has decided she doesn't want me in our daughters life. They're back together when she came out with this. Also her new BF has previously messaged me asking me to send him copies of my ex and my conversations. Is she being controlled? Or is she just favouring him?

My wifes new Boyfriend is a convicted felon during the children's first visit . The boyfriend gets drunk and threatens thier mother, she has him arrested and get a 3 day Protective order followed by a 14 day protective order. I already was very reluctant to have my 2 children around this man to begin with. Can I ban him from being around them during visitation after this (She took him back and thinks everything is fine and sees the incident as no big deal and fine to have him around my daughters 8 and 10 years old). This happened on the very first visit.

If you have parental responsibility, you have the right to be kept informed of your son's progress and wellbeing, as much as the other parent with PR has.
stresseddad 17/03/2017 at 7:07 am
I guess I have to just leave it be and see what happens it's how much my son behaviour has changed that concerns me the most. He is always developing the traits of a child with a Borderline Personality Mum, I have spoke to mind, but when I have reported they say it's life style choices. Thanks for the help, I have also been through other threads and looked up my rights and have requested for his school to keep me informed with his behaviour and absences and done the same with his Dr. Our Response: Here is the definition of harassment, Your ex is entitled to her privacy. Therefore, if your ex refuses to tell you her partner's name and you want a background check doing, then you would have to apply to court via a Specific Issue Order, There is no guarantee the court will rule in your favour, it will always decide what it thinks is in the best interests of your child.
stresseddad 16/03/2017 at 6:03 am
Does my ex have to tell me who her new partner is and name? My ex refuses to tell me her new partners name and rings the Police if I ask any questions claiming I am harassing her, she suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder, she tells my son to keep secrets and is manipulative on the edge emotional abuse but will say it's all me and that I am narcissistic. She just sneaks around and lies a lot, for example my son felt ill a few weeks ago her partner was there and she made my son stay awake until 5 am until he left so my son get into her bed then kept her of school for two days with a cold. Last month there was a incident where she drunk outside my flat on the weekend I had my child and went to see what the disturbance was as I recognise the voice she rang the Police who done a welfare check. All the communication with my son is done through him and he's only 8. I could go on and on with stories but this is a small Outlook. So my question is can I get welfare check to make sure all is well and does she have to declare who her new partner is? Social services Sent me a letter about the times she rang the Police when I rang through to say my piece they said the reports closed and that's it. I don't know where to go, I am also trying to relocate and I want feel my son is being safe guarded.

Please help! I have been with my partner for 10 months, he has a young daughter of whom he was granted an interim child arrangement order and he and his mum have residency order for his little girl. He resides at his mothers address with his daughter but we really want him and his child to move to my place with me and my young daughter. Over the time we have been together, we have all formed family like bonds. The child was removed from her mothers full time care because she was considered at risk of emotional abuse, the social workers are aware that his daughter spends time at my home, so they have visited, checked my property, checked my background and found nothing of concern to stop his child being around me. The social worker, without explanation has put a "ban" on him coming to my house with his child after school, and says he must be home with his child at all times, this means we're only now allowed to see eachother at weekends. The final court hearing is in a couple of weeks and the social worker says she is going to apply for a prohibited steps order to be placed to stop him moving his child in with me (I live 5 mins from his mothers address where he currently resides with his daughter)... The only reason the social worker has given for this is that the child is getting used to living at his parents address, and they don't want her to settled in her now home.. This is obviously understandable but now means that this grown adult male must reside at his mothers house, sharing a bedroom with two of his brothers . Does this not affect his rights to live where he wants to live in the UK... Can social services really stop us from seeing eachother through the week and only give us weekends to be together? Social worker has also advised that his mum put a separate residence application in (even though she's already a joint participant in the current residence order he has) if his mother gets the residence, then he will not be able to move the child from his mothers home ever?! Is that correct! Might I note that I have had all relevant checks relevant to safeguarding the child and there are no concerns. He is not a concern as social care have supported him in getting the residence! Can they do this to us!

@Hardtimes- I'm sure your ex (as a responsible mother) would be extra careful when choosing who she shares her house with. Lots of men apply for rooms as when couples separate it's usually the father who moves out of the family home. But there is no saying a female house guest would be no less impressionable than a female house guests on your children. It sounds to me as though there is a bit of alpha-male jealousy in your comment (understandably so I'd react the same). I'm sure what is going through your head is the person who is going to move into your home will be a intelligent, muscle-ripped adonis, whereas the possibility is much likely to be a female. You might have to trust that your ex will make sure she vets the person properly and that there is no way she'd want to put your kids at risk. Ben.

My wife just served me papers today. We have been married for five years and we have two little girls ages 2 and 1. I'm moving out of our rental (we had been saving to buy a house). She is currently on Facebook trying to find a roommate to help split the rent with which is around is $1500. She posted it and almost immediately has been getting responses from A LOT of males. My question is, do I have the right to say no male roommates? I mean, I have no idea who these men are and I have two very impressionable girls. It makes me really uncomfortable just thinking about another man living with them, even if they are just roommates.
SeparatedDads Editor 16/02/2017 at 1:57 pm
It is difficult to try to control what your ex is doing with the person he now lives with. As your ex has joint residency and you both have parental responsibility you can only hope he understands that it may affect your son and will always try to act in your son's best interests. However, if you cannot resolve your differences between you, and your son cannot also make his feelings known to your ex, I can only advise that you suggest mediation in order to try to resolve the issue.

Hello, I'm looking for some advice. Me and my partner split 6month ago and we have a 13month old daughter together. Things were fine between us and getting along just great, until she got a new boyfriend. I had looked him up on social media and found out that he takes drugs. From my knowledge she hasn't introduced him to our daughter, but when I expressed my concerns over the fact I didn't want him around or being involved with our daughter if he's taking drugs, it caused an argument and I was stopped seeing her for 3 weeks. We have now resolved that and I now get to see my daughter, but I do still have these concerns as you would imagine. And also when I'm talking to my ex partner when she's alone we reminisce about the past in a nice happy way, but when I had mentioned something innocent when she was in his company he had got involved and told me to shut up etc. I don't want any arguments between me and the mother as from recent experience I know she will stop me from seeing my daughter if I try to express my concerns. What can I do in this situation?

Hi just asking if you can offer me any advice, my ex wife has now said she is seriously thinking about moving in with her new partner he has 3 children and I have 3 children this means they will have to look for a bigger house so they can all live under the same roof, so my query is do I have any legal say so for my 3 children to move? It's not like they are moving abroad but my 2 eldest who are 15 and 11 does not want to do this I also have a 6 year old daughter and any advice you can give will be much appreciated

There are no legal rules regarding this matter. A parent with parental responsibility over their child can make day-to-day practical decisions about what is in their children's best interests.
sal Editor 21/01/2015 at 11:14 am
@Chris - this is the problem with social media, is that you can see everything everyone does. It sounds like you are obviously a touch jealous. The fact she is not trying to hide it from you means that it is probably in all innocence. The fact that she is with you, and her ex is her ex, says a lot. I'd try not to worry, but have a chat to her if it gets too much.
Chris 10/01/2017 at 11:01 pm
Hi, My ex has a new partner/carer not sure which or both. My mum who has regular Skype calls with my daughter to keep in touch, told me how my daughter had accidentally weed herself. My ex's partner or carer then took my daughter to change her. I find this very inappropriate to have someone who is not family changing our 4 year old daughter.
Any information on the legality of this would be good.
Cheers.

Regardless of who your ex is living with (or married to) you are still responsible for paying child maintenance for your own children.

hi, thank you for your response regarding the problem i posted here recently. i took your advise and instructed my solicitors to write to her[ my ex wife] and it worked. she has accepted the proposals i requested.
However, i found out that the man she married now, was once accused of raping his ex wife but he was found not guilty. this revelation has spooked me, given that he will have unsupervised contact with our two and a half year old daughter. in as much as i want to believe that he has been exonerated, some thing in my mind also tells me there is no smoke with out fire.
due to this concern, what i can do.

I have recently separated from my ex-fiancé after nearly 16 years together. We separated in October & she moved out immediately taking my 2 boys with her. Until 2 weeks ago she was living with her mum but after an aunt of hers died she moved into her aunts home. The day after she moved she told me she had started seeing somebody new & also told my boys the same day. It turned out that not only was she seeing him but had also invited him to stay with her & my sons over the Christmas period, arriving the very day we were told about him. Obviously this has made me very angry & also very concerned for the safety of my children. I find it completely unacceptable that she can bring a complete stranger into my children's lives in this way & expect them to deal with it. I have sent her numerous messages stating how I feel about this but she has failed to respond & even stopped my children from speaking to me over Christmas. It was only when I threatened legal action that she allowed my boys to contact me again. Where do I stand in regard to this?

My wife of 13 years left me April 2016. We divorced and settled by her wishes in 7 months. We had everything. A beautiful 6 bed detached country home. 4 amazing kids. A great business. She had the ideal life. Didn't have to work. She's binned the lot for a 20 year old. She's 36 and I'm 43. Now this adolescence has been introduced to my kids so soon and has all but replaced me. I've left her in the mansion whilst she carries on like nothing is wrong. One of my kids has rejected the new lad but the others are ok/ confused. I myself have found comfort in a very understanding woman but spend most days wondering what caused the wife's mid life crisis. I've worked tirelessly for 15 years for my family and it appears to be all for nothing. I now detest my ex with a vengeance for sacrificing my family unit for a spotty youth who can't even drive and she has to collect from his mums! What a joke.

You would have to apply back to court for a further Prohibited Steps Order, if you wish to try to prevent the move. However, in the first instance a solicitor's letter outlining your rights and her commitments to the order may work.

You don't say how old your step-child is, how long you have known her and whether you wish to continue a father/daughter relationship with her. While you are under no obligation to continue to see your step-daughter, much depends on whether you wish to or not. Therefore, only you can answer this question.

Hi, I'm sitting here seething! I married a foreign national, we split up and she took my two children to Sweden. Eighteen months on I am still visiting my children and staying at my ex-wifes house. She's got it all and has moved on quickly. I on the other hand continue to suffer from depression, I'm out of work and living with my parents in the UK. My situation is impossible. I've applied to jobs here in Sweden with no luck as my Swedish is basic and employers aren't interested unless I'm fluent. I'm in such a quandary, I don't know what to do. How do you cope when your toddlers are abroad and life back in the UK is lonely and sad? I've tried to find someone to talk to who is in my situation but haven't found any.

To top it off my ex-wife has just been picked up by her boyfriend (as she allows me to stay in her house while I'm visiting). My kids love me and I return to the UK in an absolute mess. My ex says she understand but there's nothing she can do and I just have to try and cope with it. I feel so humiliated having to stay here at her house but don't know what else to do, I wish I can get on with my life, but I'm just going backwards and forwards to Sweden and feeling miserable and frustrated most of the time....

@UpsetBeyondBelief - you're in a tough place. If you know for sure it might be better to speak to her calmly first (without your son knowing) and ask what she's going to do about it. There's no point going in all guns blazing - but you need to find out the truth. Jez.

My son has just informed me that my wife's new partner - who has only been on the scene since just before Christmas 2015 is smacking him when he is naughty. He told me that one day last week he, along with his cousin, and my 2 step children were all being naughty at bed time and so she smacked my step children (her kids from a previous) while this new man smacked my child and my (currently mine by marriage as we are not yet divorced) niece!!

I am horrified and don't know what to do as my ex is quite the 'gaslighter' and will most likely deny it as she denies most things the kids tell me.

What should I do?
What are the legal rights I have as father with parental responsibility towards my natural son given that we were married when he was born?

@Julzi - I'd leave him to it and his new life and if he's not interested in your children don't force him to see them. You are better off separating your life from his and keeping your distance, as being in contact and him having this other woman is obviously beating you up. If you keep away, then at least it will allow you to move on and concentrate on your children and forget about him. You don't need a man like him, he sounds like a real lowlife. Be stong and find a new happier life for yourself - you deserve it. There are much nicer men out there than him :))

Hi there when I was 25 I met a guy who already had a child to an ex de facto then after a couple of months together he went off & married someone else but lied to me. I eventually found out but after a few years of marriage it broke up he had 1 child & when his wife left him was 6 weeks pregnant with his 2nd child. He got me back then we split up again & he married someone else when I found this out I moved states & then a year later he begged to come & live with me. So after a year living together I fell pregnant & we had a son together & spent the next 10 years together. I then found out he was having an affair & I couldn't cope with him lying to me again, so I moved out of the house I bought before he moved intestate (long story there) he paid me some money but not as much as he should have, I bought a house but we have had spurts of being together again he has been playing with my feelings as when we are not together he is with a lot of different women the he was having me & another woman until I said I will not be the other woman any longer he then told me spark isn't there anymore but he is happy to spend time with me & sleep with me then he has kept this woman that is 10 years older than him who doesn't give a rats about our 9 year old son & I am finding it hard to cope with. She smokes & drinks around my son & my ex doesn't really care if he sees his son as he would rather spend time with his new girlfriend but I so want him to have a relationship with his father but it's like he diesnt care. He does not see any of his other children now that he is not with me because I created a family environment for his other children to come & visit, is anyone else going through this? I'm not coping very well.

The world would be dull if we were all the same. However, I can appreciate this doesn't help you, and your relationship with your partner's ex. Some of us are more rational when it comes to splits, which is seems you are. I imagine you view it from the perspective of how much easier it is when there is someone in your ex's life who your kids actually like and get on with. Much better that than your ex moving in a monster. On the other hand, some people see the 'good bloke' as a threat to their own position, in an alpha male kind of a way. There is really no answer to this than to not to let this man get under your skin and be the 'bigger person'. You don't say how long you have been with your partner. I can only suggest that the situation may get better with time, when he realises it is pointless holding a grudge for so long. Keep trying not to rise to his bait, keep taking the rational route and keep being the good bloke. Unfortunately, this is his loss, not yours.

How do you deal with the Ex Husband of your partner who cant handle a new guy in his ex wifes life? I am separated from my wife and she lives with my two daughters and her new partner. My concern is that the children like him and they do and he is good with them and we have even all been out to dinner, I am their dad and everyone knows and respects that. My partners ex on the other hand is the opposite. He has a new partner and they are expecting a baby but I have had to get the police to issue him with a harassment warning as I received threats directly from him to stay away from his kids and his ex. He continuously calls the kids and asks if I am at the house and asks in a way like "is that C**t there" and when he is with them he calls me every name under the sun. One phone call in the presence of his kids was so bad that his youngest apologised to me for what his father said.
I have made no attempt nor would I want to replace him as their father, they get on well with me and thats all I and their mum want but he is pushing them away from him and doing everything he can to split me and my partner up.
How can you deal with someone who would rather "slice your face off", his words then have an adult conversation.
He has met me in past when we tried to resolve things but it lasted maybe a week. The kids have never said a bad word about me and if he is worried I may have dodgy past, criminal record I am happy for any check as the only thing I have ever done was got a speeding fine about 16 years ago.
Just for record when I met my partner we were both single, he split their marriage up with numerous affairs and a ton of other stuff.

If you are truly concerned, please see article: Can I Get a Background Check On Ex's New Partner? whichHowever, as it specifies in the article, ideally, you should talk to your ex about your concerns, explaining that you are not judging her choice of partner but purely protecting your children. You may feel more at ease if you were able to spend some time with the man and get to know him a bit better. It will be good for all of you if you can have a relaxed relationship. Although it may be awkward, suggest that you all get together so that you can feel better about him being a part of your children's lives. See also Developing an Amicable Relationship With Your Ex, whichI hope this helps.

Ok i have 3 children and separated in april with my wife. A man that caused us issue has come back after 4 years and moved opposite where she lives which is also down the road from where i'm staying. Now this guy is a biker prospect or already fully fledged and they do things that maybe people shouldn't do in order to be allowed into the club fully. Because i know he's had to do these things but have no proof bar what i hear and have heard from bikers from the rallies and my wife saying he doesn't do that anymore but he's still in the club (not like after for years he's going to say hi, i still drug run), i don't want this man near my children yet she has become very close to him. Now i understand i cant have a say in what she does, not like i did anyway or wish to from this point but when the kids come into it and being around lets say a rather negative influence, i would like to know my options.

My wife ended our relationship 9 months ago, i was forced to move out but i return to the family home on an agreed basis and stay overnight when i have access with the children. I have just learnt that my separated wife is having her new partner over to the family home. I am not pleased about this, what are the legal implications as she is now trying to stop the access at the family home

Hello i split up with my ex partner in 2004 when my kids were 4 years old and 3 tears old the youngest one started asking straight away if he could change his surname, i thought what child at that age even knows they can do that let alone wants to. He has been asking on and off since we split and he is still asking, how old does he have to be to change it without my permission ? and when he does change his name do i still have to pay maintenance
SeparatedDads Editor 20/08/2015 at 11:20 am
Your worries and concerns are understandable, especially as everything has happened so speedily, you still must be reeling from the aftershock. That said, your approach seems to be a sensible and rational one and you are obviously aware of what the pitfalls are regarding acting with knee-jerk jealous reactions. Our article: How to Improve Relations With Your Child's Mother, link here may help. Communication is the key here and talking through your worries rationally, without being judgemental or critical, may get the reponse you desire. On another note, you would hope the man she has chosen to be in her life, will treat your daughter with kindness and as his own, rather than alientate her, especially as they are living under the same roof. This may not be an easy ride and I'm sure as you all adjust there will be a few teething problems. However, you can try to be the bigger person, which it seems you have the capacity to do so, and try to resolve these issues in the best interests of your child. It might be that you may even have to overcome your dislike for this man's intentions towards your ex and try to get to know him better, at least for the sake of your daughter and so you can try to get to know whether the man in her life is a decent person.

My wife of 8 years left me very recently. She'd been having an emotional affair for a month, I found out, confronted her and she chose him. She's moving in with him in 2 weeks - so a total of 2 months after meeting him.

We've agreed 50/50 shared custody, but that means my daughter who is 4 will be staying half the time in a house with a man I barely know, and I can't convince myself that my wife knows well enough either.

How can I be sure they'll both be safe and happy? How can I be sure he won't try to be a father figure for my daughter either? He didn't respect the boundaries when it came to my wife and it makes it extremely hard for me to trust that he's the 'good man' she claims him to be - particularly as his ex doesn't allow him unsupervised access to his own daughter...are there any steps I can take that don't make me look like a spiteful jealous idiot that might make my wife restrict my time with my daughter further?
SeparatedDads Editor 13/08/2015 at 2:45 pm
You could apply through the courts for a Specific Issue Order. Specific Issue Orders, much like the name suggests, are orders sought from the family court to determine a particular matter in connection with the exercise of Parental Responsibility. These orders can cover a wide range of issues that you and your ex-partner cannot agree on, such as preventing someone from having contact with your child. I hope this helps.

I have just recently been divorced as my now ex wife committed adultery and have two children, my Ex wife now has a new boyfriend who is a convicted drug dealer for dealing in very large quantities of a class A drug and is now out on probation for 5 years after serving 5 years in prison. This new boyfriend is not supposed to be living anywhere but in a family members house but is staying at her house every night which i am really not happy about. The ex wife will not listen to me about it and is adamant in letting him stay. Is there anything i can do to keep this wretched person out of my childrens lives as i know he is very bad news? I don't want to go down the road of trying for full custody because she is a good mum to the kids and i don't want the kids being dragged into courts and stuff as they have been through enough.

My wife and I split up about 2 years ago after 18 years of marriage. We two daughters, 14 and 19. I made the mistake of letting her have full custody because I didn't want the girls have to pick with who they live with and I know they did not want to go back and forth week to week, since we only live 8 blocks away from each other. She has been dating a guy for well over a year and a half and my kids like him and they seem to spend more time with him than me and it eats me up. He is at every sporting event, every occasion when we have to be together and I am very civil to him even though it eats me up inside. I feel like I'm losing them more and more everyday even though I try my hardest to schedule time and do different things when we are together. I've done the dating thing but hasn't worked out. I thought I had the world by the balls and it all came crashing down and continues to do so. How do I get out of this slump?

Hi new to the site, I have split up with my ex partner around 6 years ago, I am tied in to a mortgage with her which she doesn't pay on time and its seriously affecting my credit, she has recent got engaged and having a baby with a new partner. we have 3 children together, I have always paid the full mortgage up until her new partner moved in, I started to pay half, but now I think its time to get rid of the house, as I need to move on with my new partner and get a mortgage with her? what legal stance do I have with regards to the property I own if I want to sell it. does it make any legal difference that she now has a new partner, baby with him etc? I appreciate your help! I never wanted to do this as my children had a nice homely environment but I feel I can offer that anyway.

@paulo - it depends on what path you wish to take. You can apply for parental responsibility which means you would be both financially responsible for your child and allowed to be consulted on some decisions, If the mother of your child wishes you to become involved then you can set out a family-based contact agreement. If she doesn't, then you would have to apply to court for a contact order. If you are unsure about your paternity, you can apply for a DNA test via whichI hope this helps answer your question.

My ex turned up at my flat on Sunday morning and dropped the news that i have an 18 month old son. Any advice would be welcome.
SeparatedDads Editor 01/06/2015 at 12:46 pm
@trickysit - I shouldn't worry about this. The fact that she is with you and not her ex shows that she is where she wants to be. Unfortunately, we don't have a crystal ball and would we want to know any way, if we did? My advice is that you enjoy your relationship with her and try not to look to much into the future. The fact that your relationship started casually and has got stronger means that you are both on the right track. Yes, she will presumably have to have contact with her ex regarding the children, but as long as you are supportive and don't see it as a threat, then I'm sure your relationship will be fine. I hope this helps.

My new girlfriend of 3 months split up with her ex about 4 months before we started dating. Our relationship started quite casual and quickly became 'official'. She has two children and I am wondering if she still wants to be with her ex to 'try again'. Are there any signs I should look out for here? Any advice would be greatly received.

My child's mother has started dating a guy... She informed me that he had sorted class a drugs out for his manager... I later found out he worked for the same company as myself... I began to ask questions about him, not one person had a good thing to say about him all said he was involved with drugs & drug dealing... I approached my daughters mother and said under no circumstances is he allowed to be around my daughter & the mother can see him in her time when my daughter is with me... Where do I stand regarding this matter? I don't want my daughter to be exposed to the drug world in any way or form or to be around somebody who is involved in drugs full stop

ny wife and I have been together for 20 years. I met her when she was 17 and immediately starting dating and then marriage. We have a beautiful little girl together whose 11 and is the joy of my life. My wife had an affair on me a few times and also texted this guy while I was in the room or behind my back. I had to go just didn't feel loved. We separated and she found another guy to date not long after I was out the door. Turns out now she's 3 months pregnant with this guys child and he has two young kids of his own living at the house I also have in in my name with my ex. I see my daughter weekly, that's not an issue, problem is she is having her baby(ies) in November and were not even going to be divorced then. What name goes on the certificate?? And out of the ball park but why does sh still call me when she never cared before?? Thanks. Need help to move on.

@jeff - this is a common argument between ex's that much of the time is more 'hot air and bluster' than anything more serious. While he can, if he wants, take his ex to court for a residence order, it is unlikley that he would gain this if your partner's children are in a stable and happy home.

SeparatedDads Editor 13/05/2015 at 3:03 pm
@super dad - I am sorry to hear this and I can imagine that it is very difficult for you to comprehend. However, it is not illegal and your ex, as the mother of your child can decide. As specified in the article; all you can do is be yourself and be loving with your children. Fighting fire with fire and saying bad things about your ex and her new partner is very counter-productive. It simply confuses the children and leaves them feeling very insecure. Enjoy your time with them and simply be you. Remember, you are their father and that bond cannot be broken, and under such trying times you need to hold on to that thought.

My ex left me for another man 3 weeks ago! She had been sleeping with him behind my back and bringing him into our marital home when I left for work at 4am, she left me with the children and took all her belongings, basically clothes before kids which is wrong in my eyes but I've got full custody now. my concern is not there new relationship but the fact that the new guy has moved in with my ex wife and is sleeping in the same bed as my children, she apparently has beds on order for the kids but they have not arrived yet!? In the meantime my kids returned home to me and was telling me allsorts of story's about this new guy who they had only just met for the first time, they described sleeping in mummys bed with mummys new friend all night because they had no beds!! This guy Is a 6ft 2in guy approx 16 stone and is in a double bed with my ex wife and my children who are 4 and 2 !!!! This absolutely makes me sick to my stomach and I'm really struggling now to even get this sick image out of my head, I blame both my ex wife and new partner because they should have known better than to do this, have they broken any laws? And I know it's not but is this normal and acceptable behaviour? My kids should have never been forced into that kinda situation and I'm really not happy please help me I'm desperate , thanks

I split with my ex wife in 2010, and since then she has been on her own, my two boys now 17 and 14 live mostly with her and not me as I only have a small place although very close by, I have a great relationship with the boys and an ok one with my ex. However now she has just told me that she is selling our old home and all three are moving in with a new guy, who I am sure is fine, boys seem ok although they haven't said much.
I have asked my ex to let me have some detail about this person as he will be living under the same roof as my boys but she refuses to even tell me his name and will not tell me anything. I have no wish to cause any issue as I am sure this new situation will not affect my relationship with my children, I would just like to know what kind of man they are now going to live with. is there anything that I can do ? or do I just have to put up with it and worry.

@Rich - this always hurts, but try not to let it get to you. You sound like a decent guy who has tried to keep things amicable with your ex, which really is half the battle. Therefore, you must know that you are your children's father and nothing can surpass that love. But it doesn't mean that another person may love them and care for them too. Love can stretch, that's the beautiful thing about it, it is there to be shared. If you are protective of it, it will hurt. Facebook is evil, it might be wise to distance yourself from your ex's page. But, if it really hurts, you could always have a word with your ex and ask her to be gentle with you where that sort of thing is concerned. A friend of mine had the same thing where his boy calls his ex's partner dad too (for the sake of the younger child), it really hurt him at first, but he's used to it now as he knows that his relationship with his son is solid, so he now doesn't see it as a threat.

My ex has had another partner for a while now, and he seems a nice chap. Ex and I are still on this terms and the children spend equal time with both of us.

However, I saw a comment on ex's partners Facebook page while they were on holiday, mentioning "our beautiful children". They're not his, and it hurts. How do you deal with this?

Me and my ex split up a year ago. I say split up, I had suddenly realised that I was being abused and finally had the guts to take myself out of the situation. She stopped me from seeing my daughter for six months. I have recently started seeing her at a contact centre as I took her to court and now my contact is developing. I got to have her out of the centre for a few hours the other week and had to drop her back to my ex's new boyfriend's place, as apparently this is where they stay very weekend. It cuts me up so bad having missed such a big chunk of my daughter's life, having limited contact and having to her hand her back. Now I have to hand her back to a new man who has seen her more than I have this last 12 months. I also still love my ex and it breaks my heart knowing she is giving another man the nice side of her that I deserved. I got it sometimes which is why I was with her and what I miss. I feel like I have been completely screwed over, she abused me, had my child on purpose without my consent or knowledge, and very now and then showed me the woman I loved. I wouldn't get back to her because of her abusive streak, but can't see myself getting over her nice side. I have had girls throw themselves at me lately, and beautiful ones too, but can't even bare their company because they are not my ex and I feel she is the only woman, not including my daughter, that I can love. The fact she is shackled up with another man who has things I don't have and I know she wanted: a tall man (she bullied me about my height), a big penis (she bullied me about being small, and just by looking at this guy you can tell he is packing), and money (I suffer from M.E which she also bullied me about, and couldn't work, even though she forced me in to a job which made me really Ill - the fact that he has house and I have a one bed flat I can't afford shows he has money). He is everything I wasn't and I feel that if that's what she really wanted she can't of really loved me.
I would never let my daughter know my feelings and will be amicable for her sake, but I don't know how to cope with it all. She was my first girlfriend, fiance and the first person I loved, and still do but there is no way in hell i can go back and be abused again. It wouldn't me fair on any of us. I can't sleep because I all I see and hear is her and her new man or her abusing me. I have been waiting to see a counsellor for a year now. I need something or someone to pull me through this.

what is the background check you can get on your exs new man ?
been split since September she already has new man and he spent Christmas with them . I was only allowed to spend 2 days with my daughter a week before Christmas . evan tho I had to travel 200 miles . I never gave her permission to take my daughter 200 miles back home . just been to solicitor if I had gone earlier to them they could have stopped her taking my daughter .
but when I asked if I could get full custody I wouldn't get it cause my daughter is too young at 2 years old .but she can do what she likes with my daughter how is that fair ? women are so lucky

Needing some advice if anyone can help. My 4 year old son has said that "Jacob" sometimes bathes him and takes him to the toilet. I'm guessing this is his mums new boyfriend. I don't mind her having a boyfriend around but is there anything I can do about the bathing and taking my son to the toilet? I've never even met or even heard about this guy and and am very uncomfortable about this! I haven't bought it up with his mum yet as I needed some advice on it first.

It is nice to know that your son loves you and you make him happy. You just need to keep maintaining the contact as best you can and hopefully as he gets a bit older your ex will see her way to giving you more. Jenny.

doesn't entering a relationship come with maybe a bit of responsibility sometimes?

I had a girlfriend a few years back that had a 6 year old with a ex bf that would dodge paying support but wanted to see him .. AND WE WERE HAPPY TO ALLOW HIM TOO. He had commitment issues but wasn't a bad guy.. he loved his son but would only ask to see him once a month just for the weekend.
I stepped in, because as long as he lived with me I took care of him, entering the relationship and moving in together with her, he became my responsibility.
I could afford to pay for all of us. Didn't need or want his money.

what are thoughts on this?? what are laws?
Does this not compare to my friend that wants to see his son any chance he can get.
He pays support for his boy that he barely ever sees. and at the same time pays for his boy that he does have, and takes care of his new gfs daughter.
If his ex's boyfriend that she has now been living with for a few years makes more money isn't there a bit of weight on making their household work specifically if they can easily afford to?

I don't know everything people I just want some help, or info.
all he wants is to see his son and she has been pretty evil until it benefits her.
He isn't trying to get out of paying for his son. His living arrangements with other siblings in the house would be awesome in my opinion..

The 4 year asks his dad to stay longer with him, and says things like can you talk to mom?...
He also said something about having to sleep on the floor on a inflatable air mattress in his mom's and new stepdad's room.

can my friend see his son more? somehow?
can my buddy maybe pay a bit less somehow.. with her new bf making so much money?? ...so he can actually survive without handing her his money for rent and barely getting by?
its caused him a lot of depression... and the money is obviously tough.
He told me he doesn't care about the money and wants to be there for his boy, but I can see in his eyes.. this is killing him.. he cant even afford to be sick or absent away from work...all he wants is to spend time with his boy. And all I want to do is help him, give him options possibly..

He doesn't even know I'm writing all this, he isn't very computer savvy.
And I know I'm not the best at structuring sentences, sorry.

Please help, opinions, feedback, law... anything ?

Ok here is the situation. A friend of mind has two kids with two different girls that he is no longer with.. one of them is 15 that he has full custody of. The other is just about to turn 5 and he does not have custody. He just wants to see his 5 year old so bad.. and he is a really good guy. She pretty much dictates when he can see his 5 year old son, and every time he ends up with his son its because she is going out, or going on a holiday, or has plans. Keep in mind she doesn't drop him off often.. He has seen his son 3 times in the last 6 months. But she uses him as a backup babysitter.

At one point he was very stressed out and missed some work for a few weeks.. now that I know him he has opened up to me and explained it was because he tried to gain some custody rights, in court, I don't know... joint custody or more visitation (both) . He really wants to be with his son, has no intention of trying to take him away or being a snake in the grass. I know he makes just a bit over a thousand dollars a week but he ends up taking home around 600 every week after the court ordered child support result. (he has been paying this for years. This is before he went in to try to get more visitation or joint. )

About a year and a half ago, he moved into a new place with a girl he met and she has a daughter whos father had passed away and he is helping to support his new girlfriends daughter now.. He loves her! she's family to him now.
So he is paying for his boy that lives with him and her daughter and he pretty much supports the household. She pays too ..she makes money but not very much...but he tries to take care of everyone.
Pays rent, utilitys, food, insurance, cable bill, gas, etc etc.
And he still takes care of the kids, always putting them first before himself.
Need new shoes, bam. His boy wants to play soccer. done.
school fieldtrip that requires money, here you go. He gives them what they need as children within reason.. ( he's not buying them iphones every year and getting them like flat screen TV's for their rooms or anything.)

He reminds me of my dad. Always trying to help and take care of you... helping you with homework even though he has trouble with it himself.
spending quality time and showing you what outside looks like..and at the same time teaching you life lessons and trying to prepare you for the world.

My buddy doesn't live in a big place either... Him and his gf have a room. His son has a room and his non biological daughter has a room.
so I know his rent is around 1200 a month for a place like that.
How does he even survive??

Ok stay with me here..... The zinger is, (and keep in mind im looking for feedback and answers if possible) His ex, that has custody of his 4 year old has had a new man in her life for about 2 years now, and apparently he makes twice as much money as my friend does.(she said this)
so really here are my points.. should my friend and his new family be that s

@Robyn, I understand that you miss your grandchild and are worried about contact being stopped but if you become involved at this stage it may aggravate the situation. Your son is being denied access so it is your son's responsibility to deal with it, you can obviously guide him through this but you should not become involved at this point. If the relationship breaks down completely and the ex refuses to speak with your son you can then try to communicate with her and if all else fails take her back to court for breach of court order. Best of luck!

I am concerned about my grand daughter. My son has a daughter with someone that he is no longer with. His ex and himself has moved on with their lives with joint custody of my granddaughter which was ordered by the courts shortly after my granddaughters birth. One month ago his current girlfriend gave birth to my second granddaughter. He posted a picture on social media of his current girlfriend, my granddaughter and my one month old granddaughter. (happy times for us) My granddaughter loves her new little sister.
The mother of my now 5 year old granddaughter has kept her away from her dad for the past week, when since she was born has had his daughter at least 3 days a week and most times longer with no problem. I've been reading on the internet about it being a crime to deny the child visitation with the farther if granted by the court. What should I do at this point, to see my granddaughter. My son still resides with us(his parents.) I have really fallen in love with my granddaughter and my son his daughter. He is not calling the ex, out of fear of his daughter away from him longer.

Thank you in advance.

I have asked my Ex to not introduce her new partner to our children again until it is going somewhere ( seen as she already has only after meeting him for the second time ) and that I would like to meet him before they do NOT for what most people would think but just so I know who is around my children and that I know they are safe around this person. I have said that if my ex wants to do the same with my new partner then there is no problem at all but of course it is a problem for her to show any respect for my wishes and has said from now on don't text her or call unless it's done with a blood sucking solicitor. I get the raving hump with her double standards as when she found out that I was seeing someone it was made into a big deal she told the kids everything but when I found out found out she was seeing someone I said I hope it goes well. I just need to know if I have the right to know who is around my children

My marriage has ended as my wife has a new partner, we have a 5 year old daughter and we have agreed access and finances etc. my fear now is when she will introduce him to my daughter. I have now found out that he was arrested last year for hitting his now ex-wife, he has 2 daughters of his own but share the fears already expressed here. As he is the man that has ended my marriage and split my family I feel nothing but hate for him, although my wife is equally guilty, I don't want him to have anything to do with my daughter. Is there anything I can do?

I have just seen a lot of messages similar to what I have been through. I split from my ex wife over 2 years ago and she got everything since I have a daughter with her. I only see my daughter one weekend every 2 weeks since she lives so far away but I make the effort to see her when I can and it's not cheap il admit. I use to fly over when she lived abroad and only saw her once every 4 weeks but now she moved bk into the uk. She tried getting me done for harassment on texts aswell as she tried claiming I assaulted her which was all false and the police just laughed at her and I could of got her into trouble but did not since my daughter. My ex now has someone and even tho she doesn't admit it my daughter talks saying his name and such. To all those in my similar situation there is not much really we can do apart from try our best to see our children. I feel like my past experiences taught me that the girls get all sorts of help while the lads are left to rot. I know by heart that if anything was to happen to my daughter then the partner of my ex wife will have to run forever and it's all about us single parents sticking together fighting off these trouble ex's

my son and his wife have a 9 month old daughter. my daughter in law seems to have a lot of psychological problems - seeing 'germs' everywhere. She has been psychologically abusing my son in ways which are too distressing to repeat but including not allowing him to spend any time with their daughter, goading him, trying to get him to lose his temper which he hasn't, she has also been demanding they move house and when my son said this needed to wait a few months due to his work she left him taking their daughter and went to stay with her mother, taking our beloved granddaughter with her. Since then she has 'allowed' my son to have their daughter each weekend - previously he wasn't even allowed to change her nappy.
I am very worried about my granddaughter - her mother never takes her out and prefers to spend time 'cuddling her' she has now found a house to share with a man who we don't know. Of course we are thinking the obvious that they are in a relationship and have been for sometime (even though she only left my son on 14th feb.)Can anyone advise me how we go about keeping my granddaughter safe and checking out this man and what would be the chances of our son getting sole custody of his daughter. I am so worried about this. Thanks in anticipation.

My son and his partner even after troubled times still maintained contact but since she got her new boyfriend to move in ( who cannot for some reason see his kids) she has changed and will not speak or answer any text messages about the children at all, so if it gets serious they try to play happy families, so if you have any doubts about him get him checked by the police they are very helpful and it will ease your mind

my wife and i split in november and have 2 children aged 1&3. my wife has a new partner since dec and i've said for the sake of children not to be sneaky with him. he was hinding in laybys till i'd gone and now just hides ouit the way. Do i have a right to know who he is as he is a big part of their life and they're so young? She's civil when not seeing someone but vile when she is and i feel if she was open about things then it would be alot easier.

Hi there I split up Fromm ex bk in October when she vacated the house and left the two boys in my sole care.
After 5 weeks of being on my own in the house she had me arrested after the night before she threw a glass bottle at my head and told me we could work things out to stop me phoning the police and it worked I never phoned the police the next night was a Friday I let her come round see the kids bath them she even had a cpl of drinks and left about 8:45 later that night she had me arrested for false improsonment to get me out the house I was now living in on my own with the boys and she got the children bk,
After spending 17 hrs in a cell and them giving me an harrassment caution over 4 texts I had to b escorted round the house by the police to get my stuff and she had moved in so she made me homeless.
Kindly a friend took me in I stayed on there sofa for a few weeks up till the week of Christmas when her gran was seriously ill In hospital and was dieing so she asked for my help to watch the kids which I did I stayed in the same room as my children when she got bk late from the hospital, her gran died early x mas eve and the friend I was staying with kicked me out bec they didn't agree with me helping my ex after all the false allegations she had made about me.
I then had a friend drive 140iles to picke up on Xmas day to go and stay with them for a week when I got bk she stayed at her grans so I could see the kids, which she came bk on a daily basis and could get heated at times with the situation she had landed me in.
I found out last night that while she was with me she started a relationship with a guy in the states chatting on phone and everything and she is on about letting him meet the children after a cpl times they met so I was like I don't think so don't no anything about this guy I want checks done the lot and bec I said that she has been blackmailing in respect of the contact we had sorted out, I just moved into a house and was giving her the address when I get the boys stuff tomorrow she has been demanding all night for my address and if she didn't get it tonight I will not get my contact with them even though I have mediation tomorrow.
I don't think it's fair she can keep going bk on her word all I want is the best for my children and she is ruining me in the process,

My ex girlfriend and I split up recently,I didn't live with her but we have a 15 mth old son who I adore,I will only get to see my little man every fortnight as he lives with his mum 75mile away from me so it will be a 150 mile round trip to bring him down to my place, unfortunately I financially cannot afford to see him every weekend as much as I would love to,I'm now very worried that he will forget who I am and once the ex has met someone else my son will start to see him as his dad,I've sat here many times over the last few weeks and cried because the thought is so painful,I have no one to turn to to talk to and would like to talk to someone who has or going through the same thing

I would prefer if she didn't have the last name she has now because its long complicated but I'm guessing I can't change it. So can I hace her last name hifernated with the new one I will be taking?

Love for our children is very strong through out there life any change of circumstances effects them obviously this is a big thing which does effect them it can be made better or worse by the ex partners reaction. If communication has broken down(which is normally the case with divorce etc)it doesn't always get dealt with very well and the new partner is seen in a negative light rightly or wrongly. We as parents are the example for there future lives so and it does effect there relationships with there future partners and this seems to be forgotten in all this
Rich 24/06/2013 at 12:02 pm
If the child has your name then they need your consent. If she changes the name without your consent than it could lead to a prison sentence.

I have a baby with this lady whom I also paid lobola for her and I have a problem since we separated a year ago and she got a new man in her life, 3months later they got taditionaly married. now the problem is they want to deny me access to my child saying that i'll see him when he is old enough to travel by himself because now they say I cant go fetch him at his grannies house(his staying with the granny) because it would not be good to have 2 men coming to the house. another problem is that she claim to say they also married my son and it amazed me because I have never abondoned him and the cause of the divorce is the mother, I ddnt do anything wrong. now she tells me tat she's going to change her surname and so is my child to that man's surname. I realy need help on this one because it frustrates me going a week without seeing my son and 100% sure that he misses me a lot because whenever im with him and he realise that im gonna leave without him; he cries like nobody's business and that make me very sad. it also happen last friday when I went to see, first she was threatening me that I wont see my son anymore then she changed her mind but now I doubt because apparently is the new guy who doesn't want me to see my son, for what I dont know and im so over her here what I need now is to be with my son. I need him as much as he do and please advice me on this issue and tell me what must I do??thanx in advance.

My ex-wife had a child with her current partner and has just given up work. A few weeks ago I was told that her partner would be providing for her, their son and our daughter and I should just walk away. I think he's realised he's being mugged and has put his foot down about having to provide for a child that isn't his because my ex-wife has now gone to the CSA after having cared for our daughter on a 50/50 basis until 3 months ago. Knowing my ex-wife as I do, this decision will not go unpunished and I expect their relationship to fall apart in the next couple of years. I now feel quite sorry for this bloke as he will have a load of crap to deal with. The behaviour exhibited by your ex-wife to you will be exhibited to some other poor unfortunate in the future so all you can do is feel sorry for them.
